As seasons come and go, the one thing they have in common is that they each come with their own set of rules with regards to the colours and themes. Spring sets the tone for pastels, Summer is all about bright, tropical colours, Winter is about everything Christmas…red, green, shimmery golds and everything in between.
In the case of Autumn, it’s the season for all things pumpkin spice lattes, hot chocolate, comfort food, sweaters and snuggling under cozy throws. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, well who wouldn’t want to sit by the fireplace reading a book, enjoying a cup of tea or a glass of wine?
Of all the seasons, I was most excited for Autumn, mainly because like Goldilocks and the three bears, the weather is just right. It’s cool enough to the extent that you can start layering up with your light sweaters but still carrying a bit of the summer warmth, so you don’t need a winter coat.
What I hadn’t prepared for and perhaps nobody warned me about were the “Autumn blues”, which left me with the desire to do nothing but want to curl up in bed with my hot water bottle, binging on Netflix shows, drinking hot coffee and stuffing myself with all manner of sweet and savoury delights.
I read up on it and concluded that I was experiencing something that could perhaps be considered a mild form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons. For most people, it starts around autumn, carries into winter, and goes away in the sunnier months.
I don’t know how to explain it other than I felt I wanted to sleep more, which I did. This resulted in me falling off my groove of working out, which I had finally felt I had gotten into. As a result, I started chastising myself for being an unproductive human being, for being sluggish, for having difficulty sleeping or concentrating. I was being so hard on myself for getting a few more snoozes in. it’s ridiculous, I know.
I needed to lift my mood and energy up and where else did I turn to other than makeup, and while I’m here for the golden, bronzy browns, mustard yellows, the muted rustic reds and olive greens of the season, I wanted something brighter.
I opted to break the autumn colour rules, filmed a chill and get ready with me video, opting to go for this stunning teal and navy blue and purple eye look, which I absolutely obsessed with.
By the time I was done, I was in love with how it turned out and was definitely was in better spirits.
